New Federal Courthouse Coming to Anniston

During the 2016 Fiscal year, Congress appointed $947 million for multiple Federal Courthouse projects spread throughout the country. One of those projects will begin right here in Anniston. The new courthouse will be approximately 63,000 square feet and will be designed and constructed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold Certification. LEED is one of the most popular green building certification programs used worldwide.

 

The new building will house district courtrooms, the US Marshals Service, the US Attorney’s Office and three chambers to accommodate three judges. There are three proposed locations for the new courthouse. Those locations are the current City Hall site bounded by 12th Street, 11th Street, Gurnee Avenue and Moore Avenue... Gurnee Avenue, 11th Street, Moore Avenue and 10th Street… and 14th Street, Moore Avenue, 13th Street and Grove Street. 

 

The total size requirement is three acres and the estimated project cost is more than $42 million. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2019.
