Stepping Up Initiative Grant Awarded to Mental Health Centers
The Stepping Up Initiative has granted the Cherokee, Etowah, and Dekalb Mental Health Centers $50,000 for the upcoming 2019 fiscal year. This grant will provide a plan for case management services to establish programs to reduce the numbers of people with mental illness and substance abuse disorders in local jails and emergency rooms. The Stepping Up Initiative is a national program with the goal to reduce the numbers of individuals in jails with mental illness.
Two million times each year, people with serious mental illnesses are incarcerated across the nation. Nearly 3/4 of adults admitted have drug and alcohol abuse problems. Currently there are 15 counties in the state that have passed the Stepping Up resolution to work with local law enforcement, mental health providers and advocates.
