Police are looking for someone who stole money from the Calhoun County court system by writing fake checks. More than $380 went missing from an account owned by the city’s circuit clerk’s office. TV24 spoke with Circuit Clerk Kim McCarson who says her staff noticed out-of-sequence check numbers in the office’s accounts dating back to the month of August.
Upon further investigation, McCarson learned that someone from Georgia duplicated the office’s checks and cashed three of them at a Wells Fargo Branch in Lawrenceville, Georgia. McCarson isn’t sure how the person got their account number but does know that the office sends out checks to people who’ve been awarded money in settlements.
The case has been handed over to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department.
