An organization designed to provide services to people at risk of homelessness in Calhoun, Etowah, Dekalb, and Cherokee counties held its annual meeting today to educate the public and to advocate for the homeless. A meeting was held today by the Homeless Coalition of Northeast Alabama to discuss upcoming events and to also vote on officers who will be in charge of orchestrating these events.
The main purpose of the Homeless Coalition is to foster and promote comprehensive, cohesive, and coordinated approaches to housing and community resources for the homeless and people struggling to provide for themselves and for their families. One big upcoming event hosted every year by the coalition is Project Homeless Connect. The chairman of the Homeless Coalition says this is a one stop shop for anyone who is interested.
Project Homeless Connect is scheduled to take place on October 24th at the Downtown Civic Center beginning at 9am. Baker also tells TV24 that people in need of food or emergency shelter in the Gadsden-Etowah area can always call 211 for help by the United Way 24 hours a day.
