JSU Plans to Rebuild Merrill Hall with FEMA Grant

Jacksonville State University recently received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for more than $18 million. With that grant, they are planning to rebuild a building that was completely destroyed by the March 19th tornado. Merrill Hall was formerly known as the home to JSU’s Business and Industry students.

The building was one of two that suffered severe damage during the tornado and could not be saved. Prior to the tornado, Merrill underwent some renovations that added a new finances lab, furniture and more. Based on the design of the building prior to the disaster, the grant is expected to cover at least 75% of the rebuilding efforts.

Any remaining cost will be covered by the university and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. According to the university spokesperson Buffy Lockett, there is no time table that has been set for the demolition of Merrill Hall.
