Best buy has been taking steps towards bridging the gap between technology and older Americans. Best Buy recently announced it would purchase a company called GreatCall for $800 million. GreatCall manufactures jitterbug cell phones that are designed to have big buttons and bright screens for senior citizens. The manufacturing company also creates medical alert devices that detect if someone falls and automatically calls for help.
This financial investment move comes shortly before the tech company appoints a veteran health care executive to its board of directors. The deal to finalize the purchase will be complete in the next few months and will be the largest purchase in Best Buy history. There are nearly 50 million americans over the age of 65 and that number is expected to double within the next 20 years.
