Etowah County Agrees to Terminate City Inmate Housing Contract

Etowah County Commissioners recently approved a motion to terminate the county’s inmate housing contract with the City of Gadsden in an effort to renegotiate a new one. The contract established in 2016 between the two governments agreed to house no more than 20 City of Gadsden inmates at one time, since then, that average has risen between 40 and 60 inmates at a time.

The county still wants to be able to run the jail together because it will be more efficient but commissioners believe the contract is not in the county’s favor. The contract can be officially terminated within 90 days of cause or one year without cause. The county is now waiting for the approval of termination from Gadsden Mayor Sherman Guyton.
