A police officer is recovering at a Birmingham hospital from a gunshot wound after a responding to a domestic dispute that left two people dead at the Walmart in Talladega. The incident began as a report about an abduction at the Walmart around 4:30 Wednesday morning. Once they arrived on the scene, officers said, a driver inside a car fired shots at them, hitting one of the officers.
Officers reportedly returned fire. Two people inside the car, a man and a woman, were later pronounced dead. Neither has been identified, but police say it was the man who shot at them. A second officer was injured in the incident but not by gunfire. The officer who was shot was taken to UAB by helicopter and is expected to survive. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to handle the case.
