Annual Turkey Fry

The calendar may say Wednesday, but it was FRY-day down at the Calhoun County Jail today. More than a hundred jailbirds -- as in turkeys -- were fried by deputies and other volunteers in what has become a Thanksgiving Eve tradition.

Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade says the tradition began in 2005 when he was named chief deputy. He decided to deep fry some turkeys as a way of celebrating Thanksgiving with his fellow deputies.

Deputies asked for donations from people who brought their turkeys down to the jail to be cooked. The money raised by those volunteers is being used to make this holiday more fulfilling for some local families.
