Vice President Announces Creation of U.S. Space Command
Vice President Mike Pence announced earlier today the creation of a US Space Command at the Kennedy Space Center. According Pence, the US Space Command will help launch the military’s space force, an entirely new military service. This launch will require the Defense Department to gather various space units and agencies from across the military services in order to be a more coordinated and independent organization.
This newly formed operation could cost up to $800 million over the next five years. The former US Space Command existed from 1985 until 2002. It was disbanded after the 9-11 terrorist attack so the Northern US Command could be established to focus on homeland defense.
