The Senate has passed a Criminal Justice Reform Bill called the First Step Act. The First Step Act will ease sentencing for non-violent offenders, ultimately reducing the rate of criminals who go on to commit other crimes. This reform is the first major rewrite of sentencing laws in decades.
12 votes against the bill were from Republicans who say the bill is too lenient and could allow dangerous criminals out of jail to soon. But, Republican Senator Mike Lee says this is one bill he is extremely proud to be a part of.
The bill will now be sent to the House to get approval before its final signature from President Donald Trump.
