Several local schools have been recognized for their outstanding educational models for other schools across the state of Alabama. Weaver Elementary School and Pleasant Valley High School have been chosen from Calhoun County as Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools for the 2018 school year. Out of the 160 schools that were chosen from across the state, Weaver elementary was chosen in the top 24 because of their outstanding work with Academic Opportunity classes and intervention programs.

In Etowah County, John S. Jones Elementary has also been chosen for the CLAS School of Distinction. In February, one school from each of the eight districts will be chosen as a CLAS Banner School which will then be showcased at the schools.
