LifeSouth Community Blood Centers will recognize and honor Anniston Regional Medical Center for becoming lifesaving heroes. Mothers and babies at RMC have donated umbilical cords following birth to LifeSouth’s Cord Blood Bank for more than two years. A cord blood is blood-forming stem cells that can help patients in need of a stem transplant.
Last year, a cord blood donation was successfully transplanted by Doctor Braden Richmond in order to save a patient's life at RMC. Cord blood transplants can help treat more than 80 blood cancers, genetic diseases as well as, immune system and metabolic disorders.
A week from today, LifeSouth Representatives will present Doctor Richmond and RMC with a plaque to recognize this life saving donation.
