Voters in Favor of an Elected School Board

Thursday, January 24, 2019

The votes are in and it has been decided that members of the Gadsden City Board of Education will become elected representatives. A bill was introduced last year suggesting that members of the school board should be chosen by residents within the city limits. Out of the 36,000 people that live in Gadsden, the decision was made by only 1,800.

Although voter turnout was extremely low, more than 1,200 voters were in favor of an elected school board. The decision is expected to allow parents have an equal voice regarding their child’s education and safety.

Special elections will be held during the same time as the city’s municipal elections in 2022. After the elections of the first members of the Gadsden City Board of Education, elections will be held every four years.
