The Food and Drug Administration will doing more to alert people of the false claims being made by dietary supplements. The $40 billion industry is one many Americans participate in. Majority of dietary supplements are marketed as cures, treatments, preventatives for serious illnesses like diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancer. FDA Commissioners say they will be applying new enforcement strategies along with rapid responses to alert people about safety issues with a product.
According to the FDA, those supplements are not reviewed before they are marketed to sell, but, the FDA will now get involved if supplements carry misleading claims or appear unsafe. A recent study performed by the agency showed that nearly 800 dietary supplement products sold from 2007 to 2016 contained unproved drug ingredients.
