County Commissioners Show Support for Gas Tax Increase
The Calhoun County Commission held a meeting earlier today. And one of the big discussions that many members agreed on was raising the gas tax. The state has not had a raise in gas tax in 27 years. And commissioners believe it’s time for an upgrade.
Commissioners have issued a resolution in support of the state legislature, calling to raise gas tax. The state’s current gas tax has been $.18 since 1992. According to AAA.com, Alabama is one of the top four states that have the cheapest gas. Most states use their gas tax to make improvements to their main roads, bridges, and more.
Commissioner Tim Hodges believes this is a very important debate that needs to get resolved. Hodges says the county has over 1,400 miles of paved roads and have done its best to keep up the past. But, there is still a lot of work to be done. Hodges hopes to hear the state’s gas tax raise heavily discussed in the next legislative session.
