Man Involved in Shooting Death of Birmingham Police Officer Charged with Murder

The man involved in the shooting death of a Birmingham police officer was released from a rehab facility right into police custody earlier today. Last month, Sergeant Wytasha Carter along with another officer was shot while investigating a series of car break-ins. Sergeant Carter died from his injuries.

According to the Associated Press, 31-year-old Jeremy Owens is being charged with Capital murder, attempted murder, Receiving stolen property in addition to gun and drug offenses. In 2012, Owens pleaded guilty to robbery and was ordered to serve three years in prison.

Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith said in a press conference that Owens was arrested using Sergeant Carter’s handcuffs.
