The video on your screen shows a deputy’s patrol car going up in flames earlier this morning. Fortunately, no one was inside of the vehicle at the time of the explosion nor did it cause structural damage to the building. According to Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton, surveillance footage showed the 2009 Crown Victoria having a liquid substance coming from underneath before exploding.

No foul play is expected. Sheriff Horton adds that out of 16 vehicles still in service, five of them have more than 200,000 miles on them, while others have more than 170,000 and are eleven years old. The average law enforcement vehicle is built for five years of service. Sheriff Horton adds that he is exploring possible remedies to replace some of the vehicles and maintain the others safely until the problem can be resolved.
