The United Way of East Central Alabama helped wrap up Read Across America week by gathering more than 100 volunteers to read to children in Calhoun County. Volunteers spent half of their day reading to 116 pre-k and kindergarten classrooms throughout Calhoun County.

This year marks the 20th anniversary Read Across America has been implemented into children's lives and their schools. Volunteer Jacki Lowry read several books to a classroom at Oxford Elementary and she says she hopes this experience encourages kids to read more. United Way of East Central Alabama has also partnered with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to help less fortunate kids create a library in their homes.

The Give 30 Campaign is a yearly campaign that will give children in Calhoun County access to receive books free of charge to the family. One donation will allow a child to receive one age appropriate book each month for an entire year. The goal this year is to secure free books for 150 children.
