FDA Approves First Postpartum Depression Drug
For the first time, the FDA has approved a treatment for postpartum depression. The medication, called Brexanolone, is administered through IV drip over the course of 60 hours, and in clinical trials is shown to work within hours to treat symptoms with only mild side effects.
However, the treatment is time consuming, lasting nearly three days, and expected to be expensive. It is likely to cost more than $20,000, though it’s only administered once. The drug will be sold under the name Zulresso.
