Gadsden Pet Rescue and Adoption Center Temporarily Closing

The Humane Society Pet Rescue and Adoption Center of Gadsden has announced a temporary closure in order to end a distemper outbreak inside the shelter. Canine distemper is a serious and sometimes fatal viral illness that affects dogs and other animals and can strike anytime.

Once inhaled, this virus can travel throughout the animal’s body, spreading to the blood, and central nervous system. This illness is often times seen in young unvaccinated dogs and puppies. The shelter encourages all animal owners to get their pets vaccinated as soon as possible to prevent this illness and others.

The shelter temporarily closing is so that veterinarians can work to cure those affected in addition to protecting other animals from exposure.
