Community Tornado Safe Room Opens at Thankful Park

The Calhoun County Commission along with the County Emergency Management Agency have officially opened the new community tornado safe room at Thankful Park. Funded through State and Federal grants, The Thankful Park Safe room can hold up to 85 people and is equipped with lighting, and emergency power generator, and restrooms.

Every year, severe storms and tornadoes cause numerous fatalities and injuries. A community safe room is designed to resist wind pressures and wind-borne debris in order to provide life-safety protection.

Although there are multiple safe rooms throughout the county, EMA Director Michael Barton says residents still must do their part in having a plan and be prepared to take action before a weather threat occurs. This is the 9th safe room located in Calhoun County that will be open for the public to use anytime the county goes under a Tornado Watch or any other kind of severe weather watch.
