The First Graduating Class of Respiratory Program at JSU

This Friday, Jacksonville State University will hold its spring commencement ceremony. Out of the hundreds that will be awarded degrees will be the first graduating class of the university’s new respiratory program. JSU is currently the only University in Alabama enrolling students in a bachelor’s program in respiratory therapy. 22 students will officially walk across the stage to receive their degrees.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Respiratory Therapy is one of the fastest growing fields in the world of medicine with an above-average job outlook of 19%. Department Director Ed Goodwin says he is thrilled at the level of response this program has received since it began enrolling students in the Fall of 2017. Goodwin tells TV24 he is excited to see all 22 students walk across the stage on Friday. JSU currently accepts 24 students into the respiratory therapy program each fall and Goodwin says the university is looking for ways to expand the program to allow more students to enroll in the future.
