Georgia 'Heartbeat' Bill

Tuesday, May 7, 2019

Abortions in the state of Georgia will essentially become illegal. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is expected to co-sign the ‘Heartbeat’ Bill which would ban abortions if a fetal heartbeat can be detected. A heartbeat can be detected as early as six weeks, which is before many women know they’re pregnant.

The bill would make exceptions in the case of rape and incest, but only when the woman files a police report first. Another exception would be to save the life of the mother. The current law in Georgia allows abortions up to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy and women’s rights advocates have been fighting to keep this current law in place.
