More than 100 Anniston community leaders joined together today to watch a new documentary designed to bring public attention to the plight of the city’s homeless population. “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” is a 20 minute film that shows scenes often unseen by most of the people who live in Anniston.
Lori Floyd is the director of The Right Place, an organization that works to provide housing for low-income families and others in danger of becoming homeless. She says this documentary is an effective way to bring attention to a chronic civic problem. Floyd says the plight of Anniston’s homeless population is a community problem, and it will take the whole community to solve it.
“Out of Sight, Out of Mind” was made by Anniston filmmaker Tim Brunson, who says he is concerned about a number of issues facing the city of Anniston. He says he was interested in dealing with the problem of homelessness because it’s a topic that has not received enough attention. Brunson says he funded the production of this documentary himself.
It turned out to be a much bigger project than he first expected. Brunson says he agrees that it will take a community-wide effort involving governments, churches, businesses and non-profits to begin solving Anniston’s homeless problem.
