The Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Regional Airport is one of five regional and municipal airports across the state to receive federal government funding for major upgrades. According to WEIS Radio, Senator Richard Shelby announced that more than $5.5 million has been awarded to the Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Regional Airport for the construction of a new taxiway.

Other airports expected to receive funding are Franklin Field Airport in Union Springs, and Lanett Municipal. More than $20 million was awarded in the form of a Federal Aviation Administration grant by the US Department of Transportation. Senator Shelby believes the FAA funding will significantly improve the functionality, safety, and efficiency of all five airports.
