Auburn Police Officer Dead and Two Wounded After Shooting

One Auburn Police Officer is dead and two others were wounded after responding to a domestic violence call at a mobile home park near Auburn University. Officer William Buechner, a 13 year veteran, was killed when officers were met with gunfire Sunday night at a home on the 300 block of Wire Road.


29-year-old Grady Wilkes was captured this morning after a massive search was initiated by Auburn Police, Lee County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and other law enforcement partners. Wilkes is charged with Capital Murder, 3 counts of Attempted Murder, and second degree Domestic Violence. Auburn Mayor Ron Anders Junior says this is a tough loss for the community.

Officer Webb Sistrunk, an 8 year veteran, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital where he is in stable condition. Officer Evan Elliot was treated for his injuries and released from a nearby hospital. The case remains under investigation by Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation.
