A routine traffic stop has resulted in federal charges pending for several people involved in a human smuggling operation. According to Dekalb County Sheriff Nick Weldon, a county patrol sergeant and K9 deputy stopped a vehicle from Texas last night that was occupied by nine people. After further investigation, the sergeant discovered that they were in the country illegally and they were involved in a human smuggling operation from the southern border.
Department of Homeland Security Investigators and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement arrived to detain them. Sheriff Weldon says it’s highly likely that human and drug trafficking regularly move through the highways and interstates and he is proud of the department for helping to curb this illegal activity. This investigation is ongoing.
