With exactly 12 weeks before the start of the high school football season, another local school has hired a new head coach. Cleburne County has tapped Joby Burns to take over the Tiger football program. Burns served as Central Clay County's defensive coordinator and head basketball coach. Last season Burns' Vols defense led the charge on the way to the Class 5A state championship. The unit gave up an average of 14 points per game and allowed a touchdown or less in seven games. Burns says he is excited about the new challenge as a first time head football coach.

Burns takes over for Michael Shortt who led the program for 21 seasons. Before that Dennis Magourik served as the Tigers head coach for 17 seasons - making Burns just the third coach in program history since 1981. He has a history of playing against the Tigers from his days at Lineville High School. Burns says he will take what he's learned along the way into his new endeavor.
