It was a close call for two people who were able to make it out of their vehicle just before an Amtrak train struck it this morning in Cleburne County. The driver of the car told the Anniston Star that her car ran off the roadway, went down an embankment, and stopped on the tracks.
According to a spokesman for Amtrak, 72 customers were aboard the Amtrak train heading to New Orleans before it came into contact with the unoccupied vehicle.
There were no injuries reported by the passengers or crew members, and the train resumed service nearly an hour after the accident. With the month of June being National Safety Month, Amtrak wants everyone to be mindful of the importance of railroad safety.
