The House Armed Services Committee has approved by a voice vote the establishment of a new branch of the military dedicated to outer space. The Space Corps would be part of the National Defense Authorization Act in Fiscal Year 2020. The committee moved to create a Space Corps as an independent military branch under the Air Force. The amendment restructures the existing military dedicated to space within the military so space professionals can be recognized and offered a separate promotion path.
Alabama’s Republican Congressman from Saks, Mike Rogers, has long lobbied for this move and applauded the decision in a press release just hours after the vote. The House and Senate are expected to debate and reconcile their competing versions of the bill before it can pass Congress.
