Land Swap on Anniston Council Agenda
The fate of a land swap between the city of Anniston and the federal government is in the hands of the city council. The General Services Administration plans to build a $42.5 million federal building on the city hall site, but first, the governments must agree to a property deal. The GSA is offering to give Anniston the old federal courthouse on Noble Street plus $520,000 in exchange for the four blocks where city hall stands.
Approval of that deal is on the council’s agenda for its meeting tonight. If the agreement is passed, the GSA plans to start construction on the new federal courthouse this fall and have it finished by fall 2021.
Meanwhile, Anniston has signed a five-year lease for office space on the main floor of The Anniston Star building in north Anniston. The city will pay the newspaper $275,000 per year in rent.
