Suspects Arrested for Car Chase

Heflin Police now have the two suspects in custody for leading officers on a car chase Wednesday night that resulted in one officer being sent to the hospital. According to Heflin Police Chief, AJ Benefield, Phillip Harris and Lakaria Thomas were running from police in a Dodge Charger along Interstate 20. During the chase, Thomas and Harris began throwing drugs from the car while driving into oncoming traffic. 

 

The chase ended in Oxford, on the 188 exit ramp when Harris slammed on his brakes, causing a Heflin Police cruiser to hit the suspects’ car. The two suspects jumped out the car and took off on foot. The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital and later released. Thomas was captured shortly after and taken to the Cleburne County Jail. 

 

She has been charged with several crimes that include Possession of Marijuana, and Tampering with Evidence. Harris was arrested today and charged with a list of crimes including Felony Assault, Attempting to Elude, Reckless Endangerment, and Resisting Arrest.
