Jacksonville Police Department Adds Bike Patrol
The Jacksonville Police Department has added a new patrol unit that is believed to help increase their community outreach. Two officers are now responsible for patrolling the Chief Ladiga Trail and in addition to special events throughout the city in order to create better relationships with the public.
Jacksonville Police Chief Marcus Wood asked if officers would volunteer to be apart of the patrol unit. The two officers who were chosen ride bikes during their personal time and are happy to serve the community while also doing something they enjoy. Chief Wood says this idea has been something he’s had in mind for quite some time.
Officers had to undergo a 40 hour course training to become certified through the International Mountain Bike Policing Association. Chief Wood plans on making this a permanent unit and looks to add more patrol officers in the near future.
The officers will work on an adjusted 12-hour shift when they are needed on the bike patrol unit.
