Detention Center Repairs for Etowah County

Repairs and additions for the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office are expected to be complete by the end of the summer. Sheriff Jonathon Horton told us that he has been working on safety and other issues at the detention center since he took office in January.

Horton said there were many broken windows, non-working security cameras, and even broken locks when he took over the center. He told us his jail is the only direct supervision facility in the state, so it’s crucial to make sure things are secure.

Horton also talked about the new annex under construction near the detention center. He said when completed, it will house about 120 inmates. The sheriff expects the new annex facility to open in about 4 to 5 weeks with an open house for the community a couple weeks after that.
