A new plan has recently been announced that will remove thousands of immigrants who cannot prove they have lived in the US continuously or two years or more. Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Kevin McAleenan, says this new policy will allow undocumented immigrants to be deported without a hearing before an immigration judge.
It’s the same process that previously applied to immigrant caught within 100 miles of a land border within 14 days of arrival. According to Customs and Border Protection Data, officials have arrested nearly 700,000 migrants who crossed the border illegally this fiscal year.
The Department of Homeland Security says unaccompanied children and immigrants planning to apply for asylum will not face expedited removal. The American Civil Liberties Union Plans to file a court challenge to the new policy.
