The Department of Health and Human Services has released a plan that will allow prescription drugs to be imported under certain circumstances. Under the “Safe Drug Importation plan”, drugs can only be imported by pharmaceutical manufacturers or by professionals involved in medical test projects. According to HHS, most American drug makers are currently bound by contracts with suppliers that forbid importation.
This plan comes after President Trump pushed health officials to approve a request from Florida’s governor to import lower-cost medications. However, the plan does not allow diabetics to import insulin from Canada. Diabetic medication has become a talking point when discussing health care as it has risen sharply in price.
