Gadsden State Student Wins National SkillsUSA Competition

A local community college student has earned her bragging rights after recently winning a national competition and bringing home the gold. Rebecca Gaston is a student at Gadsden State Community College studying Salon and Spa Management while also being heavily involved in activities on campus.

After winning one of the highest student honors on campus, the President’s Cup, one of Gaston’s instructors talked to her about the national SkillsUSA Competition. Gaston first competed at the state level in the job interviewing category for SkillsUSA and made a perfect score on the knowledge test and won her first gold medal in the state job interview competition.

Going into the national competition in Louisville, Kentucky, Gaston knew that everything she’d previously been a part of at Gadsden State has prepared her for this moment. The gold medalist is one of six people throughout the state to win the highest honor at a SkillsUSA Competition.

Gaston has now received her student permit and will complete an internship at a hair salon in her hometown of Alexandria and is set to graduate with her associate degree in December.
