Fungus Could Cause Banana Shortage, Driving Prices Up

Friday, August 16, 2019

Bananas may soon be harder to find and more expensive after Colombian officials have confirmed a fungus that has destroyed banana plantations in their country as well as Asia and Australia.

The fungus has led Colombian authorities to declare a state of emergency due to the fact that the fungus, known as the tropical “race four” panama disease, generally spreads before it is discovered.

Experts believe that containment efforts won’t keep it from migrating across Latin America. The panama disease affects the soil banana plants grow in, eventually making it unable to produce fruit.
