New State Prisons
A plan to build three new prisons in the state of Alabama is moving forward. Governor Kay Ivey’s office has announced that five companies have expressed interest in building the new facilities. Two of the companies who have contacted the state, GEO and CoreCivic, are the nation’s two largest private prison companies.
The new prisons would each house at least 3,000 inmates. Governor Ivey’s office announced in February, a plan to build three new prisons to replace most of the state’s other aging and overcrowded facilities. According to the Department of Corrections, they will ask for proposals from the companies this fall.
