Purdue Pharma in Settlement Talks Over 2k Lawsuits
A pharmaceutical company has plans to settle more than 2,000 opioid related lawsuits that totals several billion dollars. Purdue Pharma, a company that makes OxyContin, is accused of a big marketing effort to persuade doctors to prescribe OxyContin. The company will reportedly offer billions of dollars for its alleged role in the opioid crisis. According to the Washington Post, part of the deal would also allow the company to restructure by filing for bankruptcy.
Thousands of cities will be involved in the federal trial set to begin October 21st, until the settlement is finalized. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 400,000 people have died from opioid abuse since 1999.
