Triple Incentives to Bring New Life to Heflin

A town in Cleburne County has accomplished something that has never been done in the state by combining three incentives that will bring senior care, new jobs, and historic development. Redevelopment plans to turn an abandoned high school into a state-of-the-art assisted living and memory care facility are now underway in Heflin.

The Mobile-based development firm, Lathan and Coleman, combined opportunity zone credits with historic tax and new market tax credits to redevelop the building for a total of $13 million. The firm also specializes in restoring historic places. What was once the school’s auditorium, has been restored to bring the community back to hold receptions, recitals, and other events.

The historic landmark will also offer residents other gathering places to enjoy their families like a coffee bistro area, chapel, and beauty salon. This project will bring high-quality senior care in addition to more than 40 new jobs to Heflin.
