Office Involved Shooting in Ohatchee

A Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputy is expected to make a full recovery after being run over by a truck driven by an Ohatchee man. 35-year-old Fred Barksdale will soon face Attempted Murder charges and more after allegedly running over a deputy. Two deputies and an Ohatchee police officer arrived at Barksdale home around 4 a.m. this morning to serve him several warrants.

The deputies and officers eventually found Barksdale inside a truck near a wooded area on Mudd Street. When they tried to arrest Barksdale, he turned on the truck and struck the deputy, dragging him underneath the vehicle. During this time, the deputies and officers fired several shots into the vehicle, striking Barksdale several times.

Sheriff Matthew Wade says that there was a woman in the passenger seat of the vehicle during the time of the incident who was not harmed. The deputy was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries to his back, leg, and foot. Barksdale was flown to UAB Hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident is still under investigation.
