Piedmont City Considering Opening a Labrador Retriever Facility

Piedmont City leaders are considering a proposal to open a Labrador Retriever breeding facility on 10 acres of city-owned property. Tim Baird pitched the idea to the city council. He said an unnamed kennel company would build the facility that he would operate. Baird said the company would breed dogs to be used for detection of explosives, a skill that is in high demand right now.

Baird, who previously worked with a similar program at Auburn University, told city leaders the facility would begin with 45 dogs. Baird also said that the kennel anticipates future expansion and would hire one additional employee for every 30 dogs it adds. If the council approves the deal, it would require a $300,000 investment by the city.
