Elmore County Former Corrections Lieutenant Indicted

Federal prosecutors have announced the indictment of a former Alabama Department of Corrections supervisor. The indictment states that 39-year-old Willie Burks failed to stop a sergeant from beating and kicking handcuffed inmates. Burks worked as a lieutenant at the Elmore Correctional Facility at the time of the incident, which happened in February.

Burks is also charged with making false statements to a grand jury. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison. Corrections Officer Ulysses Oliver pleaded guilty earlier this year to assaulting the prisoners. Two other corrections officers have also pleaded guilty for failing to step in and stop the attacks.
