A public housing project that has been around for more than 75 years has been approved for demolition by the federal government. According to Housing Authority Executive Director Sonny McMahand, the housing complex made up of 164 apartments will be demolished in 2021. The 112 residents currently living in the complex will begin moving out in the beginning of 2020.
The Housing Authority put in the request to tear down the apartments because of problems that are beyond repair. McMahand says the housing authority will meet with the board to discuss affordable housing strategies for the future in addition to whether or not a new housing complex will be built on the same site.
