Cherokee County Woman Charged with 47 Counts of Animal Cruelty

What was initially set out to be deputies performing a welfare check at a home in Cherokee County resulted in a woman being arrested on more than a two dozen counts of animal cruelty. Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver reports that 47-year-old Ruth Staggs of Centre, is being charged with 47 counts of Cruelty to Animals. Sheriff Shavers says that deputies were called to a home on County Road 793 in the Rock Run Community to check on Staggs.

 

When they arrived, they discovered multiple animals including dogs, rabbits, and turtles were suffering from malnutrition. Deputies also found several dead animals. Cherokee County Animal Control was called to rescue the animals. Staggs was arrested and taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center and later released on a bond totaling more than $23,000.
