The city of Anniston proposes to cut a supplemental education fund that financially supports a local school system. Ward 3 Anniston City Council member Seyram Selase says the city’s proposed 2017 budget includes a cut to Anniston City Schools’ Education Innovation Fund. Selase is opposed to that cut. A plush, new jury room for Calhoun County citizens who have been called to participate in courtroom cases. Calhoun County Circuit Clerk Kim McCarson says the courthouse always needed a room for jurors to get away and get snacks, drinks, and even free wi-fi. McCarson says jury duty can be a dull process, but now jurors called to perform their civic duty will have a special room just for them. Teachers and students with the Cherokee County Career and Tech Center, are collecting items for flood victims in Louisiana. According to Tech School Principal Brett Keasler the greatest need is for bottled water and cleaning supplies. Examples of needed cleaning supplies include – mops, buckets, sponges, bleach, disinfecting spray and so on. All donations can be dropped off at the school at 600 Bay Springs Road in Centre weekdays, with the deadline being 3:00pm next Tuesday.

A new galaxy cluster has just been discovered and it’s already breaking records. The cluster was discovered using NASA’s Chandra X-ray observatory and other telescopes. It’s located about 11.1-billion light years from Earth. That’s a new record for distance. Galaxy clusters are the largest structures in the universe held together by gravity. This discovery pushes back the formation time of galaxy clusters by about 700-million years.
A marijuana eradication operation in North Alabama leads to the discovery of a large amount of pot plants and sends one man to jail. Authorities arrested Tyler Davis yesterday at a home on DeKalb County Road 687 in Henagar. Agents say they spotted the growing operation from a helicopter and when they got to the scene, they found $22,000 dollars worth of marijuana plants. Davis is charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
An Albertville woman is in jail on charges she took drugs while pregnant. An Alabama State Trooper conducted a routine stop on a car driven by Diana Cortez. She had felony warrants from Marshall County. Cortez was arrested and was found to have more than 3 ounces of Methamphetamine in her possession.
